While I haven't been able to try out 2.6.14 (with or without the patch), I do remember that kernel 2.6.11 or 2.6.12 did have a very corrupt framebuffer (first char on every line was missing, other characters were sometimes distorted), and X11 (XFree86 at that time) gave a very distorted output too. Switching back to 2.6.9 gave me a working framebuffer and working X11 again, so I would guess it's a framebuffer problem, not X11. (But I'm just a simple user, and I could be wrong.)
