X won't load on SS4 (TCX)

I'm trying to get XDM (xserver-xfree86-4.3.0.dfsg.1-14sarge1) to load on 
a Sparcstation 4 (TCX, 96MB RAM) using Sarge, but it terminates with the 
following message:

    (EE) No devices detected.
    Fatal server error:
    no screens found

I'm running kernel-image-2.6.8-3-sparc32; I checked that it has the 
proper framebuffer options enabled:

    # egrep -e 'CONFIG_FB(_TCX)*=' /boot/config-2.6.8-3-sparc32
    CONFIG_FB=y
    CONFIG_FB_TCX=y

Curiously, I get zero output when I perform 'cat /proc/fb'.  I've 
confirmed that I have a TCX from the OpenBoot prompt:

    ok devalias screen
    screen         /[EMAIL PROTECTED],10000000/[EMAIL 
PROTECTED],10001000/SUNW,[EMAIL PROTECTED],800000
    ok

Any ideas on how I should proceed would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks
