Given there have been successful reports of people running Debian on T1's, it should be possible. The problem is more likely to be hardware that doesn't have drivers or doesn't have drivers in the current default kernel build. Using the hardware virtualisation support may offer a way round this if it is a problem. Why not give it a go and report back.
