Same happened to me today.

Did switch to Squeeze's kernel, too, for now.

Sending a break over the serial line does not do anything, either.
(IIRC it should trigger an OpenPROM prompt or such.)

I also checked in the remote syslog server, no information there
either.

For me it once froze after 15 minutes and once after ca. 50 minutes.
No cron.hourly cron-jobs which could have triggered that.

The machine doesn't have much permanently running stuff installed as
it's just an NTP server.
