It depends.
Simple RX-TX-GND is enough for some simple tasks, install of Solaris
older releases on ultra10 is possible with such cable.
Minicom 9600N1 and no flow-control is ok.
On the other hand, you will not be able to login over serial on fresh
installed Solaris with this cable. I learned that hard way, dissasambled
connectors on DB-9 null modem cable and soldered extra loops on each end
to provide correct DTR DSR signals.
It works ONLY if you have correct cable, and minicom is configured with
"hardware flow control", and with cable connected it will show "ONLINE"
in status bar. Or maybe it was HyperTerminal in windooze.
Modern servers use 19200 baud with software flow control with cisco
style RJ45 serial cables (blue), and even rely on TTL low voltage
signals.... so old serial is not the same as new. similar as
samba/netbios protocols from win3.1 era :)
