Thomas Does your machine have FiberChannel disks (FC-AL?) There was a problem with the driver the last time I tried to install. That was a year ago, and I was too busy to fix it. My guess is that there is an endian problem in whatever boot code that calls the driver. I say that because the driver is old and has never been changed.
You might want to try using an ATA or SCSI disk temporarily. Please let me know how it goes.
