The initrd has grown due to growing size of the kernel module directory and debian-installer itself which is also part of the initrd image. In the past, the installer had support for low-memory configurations but I think that is no longer the case. I can definitely look into options to create a low-memory installation image like we had in the past, however that will take some time due to the many other things on my TODO list. As a workaround, you can install a minimal Debian system using qemu-system and later just copy the installed system onto the disk of your target system. Adrian -- .''`.
