If you havent done so, you need to edit /etc/X11/XF86config-4 manually. In the section "Screen, you'll see some lines like this":
Modes " 800x600" "640x480" Just edit all the lines that look like this, into something like this: Modes "1024x668" " 800x600" "640x480" As X always chooses the highest specified resolution and color depth by default, X should now start in 1024x768 mode.
