I also drived into that problem, and it's not related to amavis, to clamav in my case. Clamav changed it behavior the lastest builds (http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/c/clamav/clamav_0.73-2/ changelog ) it doesnt run as root anymore, so after upgrade the mails were stopped at amavis.
