Hi Branko,

thanks for your help. 
I indicate the partition explicitely now
in lilo.conf. the relevant part is:

other=/dev/hda1
  label="WinXP(hda1)"
  change
  partition=/dev/hda1
  activate
  set=NTFS_normal

  partition=/dev/hda2
  deactivate
  set=FAT32_lba_normal

this seems to work fine.
