[ my overreaction to Arrigo's post and his response snipped. Basically, he wants TERM=xterm by default so that non-unix literate people at his site can install debian with a simple dpkg --set-selections. ]
I'm going to keep my view that they need some hand holding. After all, setting up X is something I wouldn't leave many to do on their own. With that assumption, would a simple "select the default term variable from the list below (xterm, xterm-debian, xterm-xfree)" question being asked during the xterm install solve your problem? If so, that question has been asked, and I'm sure Branden will get back to us when he has a chance.
