I'm a little confused. You were having some trouble while upgrading to potato after installing slink, or you were having some trouble installing slink? If you're having trouble with slink, that should probably be directed to debian-user, not debian-testing. If you're having trouble with potato, then say which version of tetex-base you're trying to install and what mirror you got it from. If possible, look at the installation script and see if you can tell where it's hung. Look at the process table and see what's being executed.
