Screen Resolution and Mouse Pointer

I just install Sarge and everything seems to work except to 2 annoying 
problems.

1.) The screen resolution keeps defaulting back to 1600x1200. I can change 
it, but it will reset everytime I logoff and back on.

2.) I get 2 mouse pointers in Gnome, a black "X" and a standard arrow 
pointer. The X will not respond to anything. The arrow pointer works fine.

Any suggestions??
