This usually does not happen in teTeX, so I thought this was a debian problem...

In the xdvi wrapper script, replace the last line by
strac xdvstrace -e open xdvi.bin $NAMEOPT ${1+"$@"}
The strace output will show the names of all files which xdvi.bin opens.
