What Are Some Examples of Service Projects That Took Place on
National & Global Youth Service Day 2005?
                * Girls from Evergreen Valley High School in San Jose,
California conducted an awareness campaign to educate their peers and adults
on the effects of second-hand smoke, and reduce the smoking "cool" factor.
They designed ads to be distributed in classrooms, buses, movie theatres and
billboards, using marketing skills they are learning in their economics
class to determine appropriate advertising locations.

                * Boise State University students enrolled in a
literature class focused on Chicano/a culture partnered with two university
student groups to plan and implement "Celebrating Diverse Communities
through Literature" at the Hispanic Cultural Center to increase awareness of
Chicano/a literature. Students conducted information sessions, readings and
discussions for high school students, teachers, librarians, and community
members to make Chicano/a a valued part of American life and culture.

                * Blossom Montessori School for the Deaf in
Clearwater, Florida partnered with the Pinellas County Habitat for Humanity
to build bookcases and collect donated books for twelve new residents of
Habitat for Humanity homes. The children (ages six to twelve) read at home
with their families as part of the project and learn construction skills.

* In Mission, SD, Matthew Her Many Horses encouraged fellow students
from his reservation, Rosebud Indian Reservation, to read books from his
book cart while waiting for their school bus. He enticed students to
participate by dressing as the Cat in the Hat. He invited guest readers to
join the students and read, hosted a book hunt, introduced the project to
parents, had book theme weeks where students create crafts reflecting the
theme, and had a reading celebration for all who participate in this seven
week project.
