Nun normalerweise darf aber nur der angemeldete Benutzer das Display nutzen, Abhilfe schafft hier xhost (siehe man xhost). Eventuell wurde unter deiner Gnomeumgebung beim Starten immer ein xhost local:root@ gemacht??
