Para compilar o kernel no Debian fiz o seguinte:
# apt-get install kernel-package libncurses5-dev fakeroot wget bzip2
build-essential
# make menuconfig
# make-kpkg clean
# fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers
# dpkg -i linux-image-xyz
No boot esta aparecendo o seguinte:

Done
Begin: Running /script/init-premount
Done
Begin: Mount root file system...
Begin: Running /script/local-top
Done
Begin: Waiting for root file system...
Done
ALERT: /dev/sda1 does not exist
