Gustavo, Tenho essa mesma situação na minha casa, porém, a marca/modelo do notebook é diferente.
Eu fiz um pouco diferente do que você fez, coloquei na barra do Gnome um atalho para a configuração chamado "Indicador do Teclado", com isso você pode escolher o teclado que você estiver usando no momento, porém, o processo de mudança é manual e instantâneo, você não precisa reiniciar a X. Aperte com o botão direito em cima da barra do gnome, vá em "Adicionar ao Painel..." e depois procure pelo programa chamado "Indicador do teclado", selecione e aperte em "Adicione". Aperte com o botão direito em cima do botão que foi adicionado e vá em "Preferências do teclado", na aba "Disposições" você pode configurar os dois teclados e selecionar facilmente pelo botão que foi adicionado na sua barra do gnome, assim sendo, quando estiver os dois teclado configurados você pode facilmente apertar com o botão esquerdo do mouse e selecionar o teclado desejado. Infelizmente isso me lembra aquele icone que aparece no Windows para mudança rápida de teclados. Abraços!
