Isso é por causa da qtde. de memória da placa (2MB) 
não é suficiente para suportar cores de 24bbp.
O mínimo de memória pra cores de 24bbp é de 4MB, 
caso das Diamond Stealth 64 e outras com chips da família S3
(Savage, Savage S3, S3 960, 968).

Falando sério, hj por R$ 100 tu compra uma Riva TNT 32MB (pelo menos aqui no RS)
e te incomoda bem menos.
