Y otambi�n tuve este problema, y lo solucion� poniendo la distribuci�n de teclado correcta en la herramienta de teclado de gnome. Para acceder a ella, en el men� aplicaciones>Configuraci�n de escritorio>teclado, aunque posiblemente este no sea el comino correcto y debas buscar en herramientas del sistema, ya que no me acuerdo muy bien y en este momento no puedo hacer uso de mi Debian con gnome.
