Abre /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 y mira que en "Section device" ponga: Driver "nvidia"
Si lo pone, si que lo estas usando y te deberia salir una pantalla de nVidia al arrancar las X (esto se puede quitar con una opcion). si quieres usar mas particularidades de la tarjeta como TwinView (si lo soporta) o cosas semejante. Mirate el leeme de nVidia con la lista de opciones.
