Yo lo instale de la siguiente forma en debian Etch no hace mucho:
m-a prepare
m-a a-i nvidia-kernel-legacy-source
apt-get install nvidia-glx-legacy
ahora cambio en /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV36 [GeForce FX 5700LE]"
Driver "loquesea"
por
Section "Device"
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV36 [GeForce FX 5700LE]"
Driver "nvidia"
y ya esta. Todo pirulandome muy bien.
