Normalmente, si el escaner está soportado por sane (en tu caso así es) sólo es necesario conectar y tener encendido el escaner y a continuación ejecutar xsane y te lo reconoce. Prueba a ejecutarlo como root, eso te indicará si el problema son los permisos.
