Me temo que no, de la p�gina man de gateways: /etc/gateways is used by routed(8); the file contains a list of gateways which may not be located by using only information from the SIOGIFCONF ioctl(2) when routed(8) is started.
Si no usas routed, no se usa gateways, seg�n dice ah�. En /etc/network tienes directorios: if-donw.d if-up.d if-pre-up.d if-post-down.d Dentro de ellos puedes poner scripts que se ejecuten cuando ocurra alguna de esas cosas que indican... Si dentro del if-up.d pones un script con el route add, listo.
