Saludos, yo hace poquito que me he peleado con el mismo tema: Puedes hacer apt-get install gnome y te instalara todo lo necesario y lo innecesario tambien pero puede llegar a funcionar bien. Si quieres hacer una instalacion mas ordenada, te aconsejo seguir este orden:
apt-get install gnome-session apt-get install xbase-clients apt-get xserver-xfree86 apt-get install xfonts-base apt-get install gnome-control-center apt-get install gestor_ventanas has de adaptar los paquetes a tus necesidades :) asi mas o menos te deberia de arrancar cuando lo consigas configurar todo, pero trae bastante mas faena que hacer apt-get de todo el gnome. venga animo y suerte!!
