Yes. Alternative kernels are available in /debian/kernel . If I remember correctly, the bootdisk is a MS-DOS formatted disk, and includes instructions on how to change the kernel. I had the 0.93R6 prerelease in mind (available to developers), which has a kernel near 1.2.10.
