Right now, /etc/profile only provides PS1 and PATH. In PATH you should not include "." -- it's up to the user (~/.profile) to do this.
Perhaps some programs might add useful things to /etc/profile;
after installing less I would like to see
PAGER=less
export PAGER
I have not installed Debian's TeX; do you put TeX's PATH in
/etc/profile?
