Dirk Eddelb"uettel: Can someone give me a hint about where to find a remote time server? As I never reboot with this darn stable 1.2.13 kernel, my clock gets badly out of sync. For what it's worth, I'm in Eastern Ontario, bordering New York state.
Hint: $ dpkg -L | egrep 'doc|info|man' >From /usr/doc/xntp/notes.txt.gz: In the case of a workstation operating in an enterprise network for a public or private organization, there is often an administrative department that coordinates network services, including NTP. Where available, the addresses of appropriate servers can be provided by that department. However, if this infrastructure is not available, it is necessary to explore some portion of the existing NTP subnet now running in the Internet. There are at present many thousands of time servers running NTP in the Internet, a significant number of which are willing to provide a public time-synchronization service. Some of these are listed in a file maintained on the Internet host louie.udel.edu (128.175.1.3) on the path pub/ntp/doc/clock.txt. This file is updated on a regular basis using information provided voluntarily by various site administrators. There are other ways to explore the nearby subnet using the ntptrace and ntpq programs. See the man pages for further information on these programs. Also, most files in /usr/doc/xntp suggest ftp to louie.udel.edu for various bits of documentation. -- Raul
