The Non-GCC header message looks crucial. It means that xtract doesn't recognise /usr/src/linux-1.3.59/vmlinux as an a.out executable. Would I be right in thinking that you've installed ELF? You've got to use the a.out compiler with the kernel (As far as I know.). If not then it will be useful to see the output of file /usr/src/linux-1.3.59/vmlinux' and the file sizes of vmlinux and System.map.
