I have seen something like this happen on other systems when doing a
"getwd" on an NFS filesystem when the persmissions of the mount point
were not correct.

If this is on an NFS filesystem, try umounting it and doing an "ls -ld" on
the mount point.  You probably want the permissions to be "777".
