You haven't made it clear exactly what happens. This is my interpretation of your description: When you start xdm, the X server starts and the login window is displayed. When you enter your username and password, the login window disappears and an xterm with a shell starts. When you type 'xconsole' at this shell, you get the error you mentioned. Is this correct?
