Thanks go to those who responded to my dual 3c509 configuration problems. Your information led me right to the solution and it works fine.
For those of you who would ever want to do the same, there is one issue with the 3c509 which should be noted - Because both NICs use the same configuration register address to read EEPROM data, when autoprobing it's not clear which of the NICs will become eth0 and which will become eth1.
