The 3C509 (Etherlink III) is fine to use, as long as you don't use _two_ in the same system. That works, but you can't tell which one gets attached first and that is a problem for gateway systems.
You didn't say what kernel version you were using, did you? There have been
lots of bugs in the networking code.
