I haven't seen xstr since BSD4.3... partially because gcc *already*
combines equal read-only strings, at least within a single source file
(which pcc didn't do.) It's still available as part of NetBSD, so you
could get the sources from there; if you're not up to packaging it, I
suppose I could cook one up if noone else is interested...
