Hmm, I'm using PCMCIA with linux, without any kernel changes, I'm not sure why people are saying they need that (unless something has changed in the latest release, you need to have kernel sources around so it can build some more things as modules, but you don't need to change the kernel at all...)
I've run two laptops (different vendors, same controller chip) using debian and David Hinds PCMCIA code recently; I'll try and set up a 1.1 package when I mine gets back from the shop. (I'll also try and dig up my 0.93r6 package, since I've gotten a couple of requests for it...)
