No, it was because the License was non free from the beginning, The fact that they agree or not with it doesn't change a darn thing to the fact that the can't do it.
We are both right, I was talking about the case #2, and you reminded me about the case #1. But this doesn't mean that Debian developers have a choice. Acting in the proposed way will eliminate case #2. Case #1 is up to the authors of non-free.
