yes i know how to compile and install X, that's not the problem, what worries me is the dependencies, if you don't install full X 4.0, you will get bad colors in xterm, and other such problem, and now that dri is merged back youw will have conflicts with mesa as well. maybe having xfree/mesa stub packages could solve this, like it was done fro the svgalib-dummy package i don't know, and this discution is off topic here.
