The key part looks like this: next unless /\[\s*([[:alnum:]])\s*\]\s*(Choice\s+([[:alnum:]]):\s*(.*))$/; my $orig_rank = $1; my $option = $2; my $orig_candidate = $3; It doesn't count lines from the start, or anything like that.
