The goal is not to reduce energy use. The goal is to reduce fossil fuel use.China isn't concerned with any paradox. If that means to temporarily build even more coal plants until the build-out of CO₂-neutral sources has advanced enough, then so be it *shrug*.
AI/LLMs or not, and Debian's statement about its use, are not going to affect any of that by any detectable margin.
Note that I'm not saying that we should simply ignore the environmental effects of current LLM tech. But if I'm running my GPU only on my surplus solar power, why should this GR's environmental concerns affect me, much less prevent me from including its output in Debian?
Learning about it made me really quite depressive. Sadly not in a funny way at all.
