Yes, you can compile it by source too but I think it's better to provide the
package inside the debian archive for those who are find with the default
configuration and for those who want to change something in config.h, they
just have to fetch it and rebuild it with the native debian tool. It's more
consistent with the rest of the system.
But this is my opinion. I could take care of maintaing the package through
debian-mentor too. I made package for amd64 on my machine and they works
very well.
