It's specially useful for synchronizing a music collection with portable devices that either don't support some audio formats or that could benefit from smaller file sizes obtained with the usage of a more lossy audio format. . It can transcode between the FLAC, Ogg Voribs and MP3 formats. Transcoding can be done in parallel for optimal performance in multicore computers. synconv can be instructed to escape special characters to work around limitations in filesystems such as FAT32.
