I would much rather sponsor than take over, so this sounds perfect.  I
agree that this is a good entry into debian maintenance.  It should be a
pretty simple package to stay on top of.  Of course feel free to use
mentors.debian.net, but also please contact me directly to request
sponsorship, and if you don't get a timely response, feel free to
nag. :-) It shouldn't take much of my time to get this going for you.  I
will be away from my email during the week that contains new years day,
but otherwise I should be pretty responsive.
