I've not yet analyzed if work in this fork was submitted partially or in full upstream (which now has 1.2.11 version). It provides a set of optimization patches for recent x86 processors, speeding up operations a number of folds (see e.g. "Optimizing zlib" of http://www.mccauslandcenter.sc.edu/crnl/optimizing-spmfsl). I just discovered about it because upcoming release of dcm2niix is offering an option to build its superbuild against this fork, since it has shown to lead to great runtime advantages. Not yet sure if it is worthwhile packaging or some optimization patches could be generalized to be adopted upstream.
