There is a script that was written by Paolo Molaro in the CVS tree which can help with this (tracking changes). I use it very much. This has been discussed on and off on this list, last time a couple of months ago. Someone (who I don't remember) proposed a system that I thought could work quite well, but I never saw anything more about it. He claimed he had posted code somewhere, but it never reached me.
