hi,
http://packages.debian.org says:
Even when searching on subwords is not checked, appending an
asterisk, '*', to the end of a keyword will allow subword
searching for that word.
Searching for "foo*" says:
Error: "foo*" is not a valid search request
bye,

This is a documentation bug. The cited statement is not true for
the current search_packages script.
