Thanks for that! Optipng is a new to me, certainly a useful tool to have around. The cropped-swirls however, might as well be indexed... reduced the size to 5.1K. The idea is to have a rich but fairly small center graphic (debian GNU/Linux in this case) possibly with alpha channel and good colours on top of a lightweight repeated image.
