I actually tried to cp with the usb unmounted, i thought this was a
new magical command :) .. it wasnt :)

No, it really does mean unmounted. If you have the stick mounted and
copy the files to the device node then you run the risk of corruption or
having the content of the mount written over the top of the installer
files (or vice-versa).
Note that mounted here is not the same as "inserted in to the machine",
which might be where the confusion comes from?
