Hard to say what the previous version was. The last stable debian X I had
installed was 3.6.x series since the 4.1.x stuff refused to configure on my
GVX1 card.
After this I compiled and installed X4.2.0 from source and just used make
install to install it. This worked, but I had to use the text-mode xf86config
because the GUI xf86cfg would lock-up. I even applied a patch from Sven to
fix an rgb buffer problem. So, you can see why it's hard to say which is on
my system. I since re-installed your x-window-system, but I had xbase-clients
and others on hold at the time. This only came up when I did an apt-get
--ignore-hold dist-upgrade.

I hope that this works for you. I really don't want to go changing the page
just to put a link on it for this.
I'm sure it's probably something simple, but for the moment it's keeping me
