This bug in fact appears to be to do with the nvidia drivers, version 41.91. After having downgraded to 31.23, my system has returned to full stability. Might I suggest that unless your graphics card is unsupported by the earlier release, you downgrade to it until either a new driver release is available or a fix is released for X?
