[Thomas, are you subscribed to this list?]
[Actually, no. I can hardly follow the lists I already am subscribed to, but I read the archives once or twice a week.]
I heard the driver interface has changed in HEAD. Does that break binary compatibility only, or source compatibility as well?
Speaking for the SiS driver only: Binary only.
The ABI version number was changed because some code from the Xv part in the drivers was moved to a common place (reducing the source size ridiculously, IHMO). Otherwise there were no changes.
The SiS driver source is unified for all XFree versions since 4.1. I kept the (otherwise removed, small) code pieces in the source (inside compiler-ifs checking the XFree version) in order to reach a broader testing audience and to reduce maintainance efforts. I don't intend changing this, so updates for any version of XFree can be pulled from HEAD any time.
Thomas
PS: HEAD is updated about once per week; the most current version, however, is always available on my website http://www.winischhofer.net/linuxsisvga.shtml along with detailed documentation.
PPS: While we are at it: As you might know, the SiS DRI driver was "disabled" in the 4.3.0 release because it never got ported to Mesa 4. Would it be possible to keep the xlibsmesa3 packages in the archives, even after 4.3 hits sid? Installing these instead of the 4.3 ones works like a charm... and even if current DRI support on SiS chips is far from being perfect, it's better than nothing...
